FREE blog review for my readers- Part 1

Hello dear readers, As promised, here i am with my FREE review for two of the blogs. For rest I will provide the review in my next posts.

In this post, I have provided review of two blogs of 'Steve' and another one of 'The Judge'

Steve's Blog- My review
http://stopbreathingnow.org/

Layout/Design:
His is an aqua theme with three columns with content in middle. The header is for this site only but looks as if its a Banner !! I would suggest to use a header that goes along with Aqua theme. On left bar, we see blog search and on right Google search- i feel you can combine these two and better provide only 'Search' option instead of these two.

Content:
The site has pretty interesting things to read. Also, I noticed that there are very less comments left on this site. Now for this, he can end his post in such a way as to prompt the reader to comment him. That would make his blog more interesting :)

Advertisements:
Google Ads on right seem good, but i would say better blend these with your template. I mean change the background colour of your Ads to blend it with Aqua theme. Rest looks fine. Also I would advice you to remove Alexa rating as it displays 'No data'

The Judge Blog- My review
http://mediamorgue.blogspot.com/

Layout/Design:
The header seems very different showing foot ( goes very well with the name- media morgue). The gray and black colour scheme really looks fabulous. One thing i feel is you need to scroll down too much on the home page itself, so it would be great if you keep just 6-7 posts on main page.

Content:
Content is always the king and i feel this blog has pretty good and interesting posts related to media. To take an example, this post looks funny http://mediamorgue.blogspot.com/2008/01/meet-spartans-or-not-preferably-not.html
Now to make it more interesting, it could have ended like "So shall we meet the spartans ? Well see the clip and tell me what you think ? "

Advertisements:
I feel Google Ads can be taken advantage of and some ads on right hand side can be reduced.
Though Google Ads are present in posts but they are not noticeable. you can consider a 160X600 vertical banner on right side, which i feel would be a good use of google Ads.

So people, here I end my post with the review of two blogs. Please comment on how I did this review and if you would like to add some points for both these Guys, feel free to comments here. Thanks !!!

Agree with the header thingie.

Regarding the search boxes, well perhaps he designed it to be that way.

Might not look good if the 2 boxes are packed together.

[Content:]
Its contents does seem interesting.

Less comments because it requires users to register and login first before one is able to comment.

Bad idea, 'forcing' people to register and login to comment is never a very bright idea unless there is really good incentive for doing so.

Does ProBlogger.Net requires its readers to register and login before commenting?

Yes, he can end his posts with some questions, but I believe the main reason he is getting so less comments is that registration is required before one is able to leave a comment.

And yes, it would make his site more interactive, and interesting.

Agree with the color blending of Google Ads. It stands out too bright as of now.

I would say leave Alexa Widget there. One's site can climb the Alexa Ranking much faster if one's site has the Alexa Widget installed.

Yes, I am aware that many folks just dismiss this as a myth, but it appears to be working nicely for me.

It can be relocated to the bottom, if need be. Mine is placed at the very bottom as well.

Header is very suitable. :)

The color is very fitting with the name, morgue. Black and Grey kinda means death and decay.

Agree with the scrolling down thingie.

[Content:]
Agree, his media related articles are certainly amusing to read up. :)

The "Meet the Spartans" video share article totally cracked me up! Thanks for sharing the link!

Agree that he ought to end his articles with a question.

[Advertisements:]
Agree that a bit over-Ad on the right sidebar.

Suggest to replace the Project Wonderful's Ad Space with more 125x125 to attract fellow EntreCarders to advertise there, and 0.50 is a bit expensive.

Agree with the Google Adsense suggestion.

Thanks for the review. Media Morgue is all about the decay of creativity in the film and television business. I have always said that Hollywood is a machine that chews up dreams, spits out garbage and calls it art. I wanted the site to reflect that. Glad you caught on to that.

As for the ads, yeah, I am still tinkering with that. I dont want to kill people with ads on the sidebar, but with the site being so long (lots of scrolling) I figured that this might be safe.

As for the length of the site, I have set it to only 7 days, so these are just the articles from the past week. I've attempted to narrow this down more by adding a "read more" expander to the site. Hopefully that helps. If its still too long, I can shorten it more, but I dont want fresh content to fall off the main page.

Thanks again for your review. I will definitely be working to improve the site and your advice was a big help!
